Igniting Change: The Gender Match

Abstract: Over the past few decades, development researchers and practitioners have spent countless resources trying to identify the perfect recipe for development policies and programs to follow when tackling food security, malnutrition, and poverty in poor countries. In this talk, we turn to three speakers from the development research community who make the powerful argument that the “missing ingredient” in many cases is paying attention to gender in development. Agnes Quisumbing will speak about her research on agricultural interventions and reductions in micronutrient deficiencies in Bangladesh. Jemimah Njuki will discuss her research on women, value chains, and collective action in Malawi. Ruth Meinzen-Dick will speak on how collective action can empower women and improve their communities. All speakers point to the larger development gains that paying attention to household behavior, gender relations, and women’s empowerment can spark.
